The success of the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards favored cable TV over Netflix in surprising levels – despite the recent success of Netflix shows like House of Cards, shows on cable TV took the lion’s share of awards. While this year’s ceremony was none too surprising when all is said and done, a few memorable moments, certain shows that swept the awards table, and a humorous presentation by Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler, Jimmy Kimmel, and Weird Al Yankovic made this a successful and entertaining Emmys.
The most moving moment of the ceremony was the tribute to Robin Williams. His good friend and actor Billy Crystal presented the memorial. Crystal called Robin the “greatest friend you could ever imagine.” His insightful comment that “it’s very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in all of our lives” struck a chord in the audience.
Touching moments also included tributes to Maya Angelou and Shirley Temple, who were laid to rest during the past year. Sara Bareilles sang a beautiful version of Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” during the tributes.
As far as awards go, Breaking Bad and Modern Family stole the show. Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad took home a whopping five awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Brian Cranston (Walter White), Outstanding Supporting Drama Actor in a Drama Series for Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Anna Gunn (Skyler White), and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Modern Family secured wins in Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Ty Burrell (Phil Dunphy), and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
Not surprisingly, the talented actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, most famous for her roles in Seinfeld and Arrested Development, received an award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her show Veep.
The Big Bang Theory, The Amazing Race, and Mom also took home awards.
