Start Your 2017 The Right Way With These New Year’s Resolution Ideas

New-Years-Resolution-Ideas

The swell of New Year’s resolutions just before the end of the year is sometimes attributed to the poor choices we make around the holidays. Indulging in a few extra helpings of turkey and chomping on a few too many cookies at 2 a.m., for example.

Unfortunately, most of us need New Year’s resolutions to keep our resolutions because research shows more than half of us will give them up at some point during the year. Often, we give up because our resolutions are too far out of reach. Instead, our resolutions should be to simply start something new and let it grow naturally.

If you need some ideas, have no fear! Below, we outline a few simple resolutions, along with some words of wisdom that may get you feeling inspired. Don’t worry, they aren’t all about eating healthy or getting more exercise!

Get Serious About Your Health — With Small Steps

Okay, this one is about your health. We are getting it out of the way early, but it is important. When it comes to diet and exercise, people may give up because they try too much on day one. Unless you are already on a daily diet and exercise program, working out too hard and extreme dieting can overwhelm the body or cause injury. When this happens, you not only miss out on achieving your goals, but also may be worse off than before.

Resolve To Diet and Exercise The Right Way: Make small changes to your lifestyle. Eat smaller portions, indulge in fewer sugary snacks, and get 10 to 15 minutes of cardio a day in whatever free time you can find. You’re less likely to give up if you start with small, manageable changes. Every two weeks do a little bit more. Then go big next year.

As Doctor Oz writes, “Just 100 fewer calories a day can make a difference. Every long-term dieting program has found one uniform insight — eat 100 calories less today than you would have eaten. That’s half a soda less; one doughnut less. Small steps done well are what make it happen.

Use Fewer Screens and Create Something Special

Our lives are too dominated by screens. They are in our pockets, inside our cars, at our desks and all around our homes. Screens provide a great escape with brief moments of entertainment, but they might not be giving us much satisfaction. On the other hand, if you learn to sew, crochet, paint, sculpt or create your own jewelry, you have the perfect opportunity to develop a worthwhile hobby that is relatively inexpensive, and you can learn while comfortably in your home. As a bonus, you can give your handmade creations as gifts, which will be greatly appreciated by strangers, friends or family.

Resolve to Develop a New Hobby: Pick a hobby that is inexpensive to start and not overly complicated. Find an instruction book or online video (an acceptable use of your screens) and practice for at least 30 minutes a day. Get the basics down, then work your way to more complex projects toward the end of the year. As you progress, spend more time each day practicing and challenging yourself to do more.

As Bob Ross of The Joy of Painting said about creating something yourself, “I can’t think of anything more rewarding than being able to express yourself to others through painting. Exercising the imagination, experimenting with talents, being creative; these things, to me, are truly the windows to your soul.

Start Home Renovations, But Skip the Contractor

Some people suggest that doing it yourself is a dying art form. Our lives are busy, and it may be easier to hire a contractor to complete the repairs or projects we want to see finished. Except, the skills you learn by completing your own home renovations will carry with you forever, especially in a pinch when a contractor isn’t nearby. Also, you can use your expertise to help others, which is a kindness and a chance to score brownie points. Plus you’ll get a lot more joy seeing projects come together when they are finished using your own hard work.

Resolve to Be More Handy: Before calling a contractor, ask yourself how you can complete the project yourself. Go online and find some instructions, watch a few videos, then head to your local hardware store with a list of parts and some information about your project. With a little advice and a few safety precautions, you will easily complete your first project. Some things may require a contractor in the end, but there are plenty of other tasks that you will find are easier than you thought they would be.

As home improvement expert and television personality Bob Vila writes, “[…] learn how to do things, whether it’s around carpentry or masonry, or just in terms of fiddling around with design. To be an experimenter and to be a student. I mean, I’m 61 years old and I’m still always looking at new solutions, new problems, new areas, new things. It’s, I think, the best way to be.

There are a lot of other New Year’s resolution ideas, but we think these three could apply to most anyone. Resolutions are not always easy, but finding an activity that you might enjoy, using a little patience and making small steps forward might ensure that you aren’t someone who gives up their resolutions so easily.

Fashion Trends for a Stylish Spring/Summer Look in 2016

0315-fashion-blog-v2

You don’t have to be a celebrity like Ariana Grande, Ciara, Sienna Miller, Kerry Washington or even the Duchess of Cambridge to rock it in the latest trends this spring and summer. With designers at all price points taking cues from Fashion Week Spring 2016, there are affordable and fashionable looks out there — you just need to know what you’re searching for!

Colors of the Spring/Summer Fashion Trends

pantoneeee

The PANTONE® Fashion Color Report for Spring 2016 points to “colors that transport us to a happier, sunnier place, where we feel free to express a wittier version of our real selves,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the PANTONE Color Institute.

These colors for both men and women include (from left) rose quartz, peach echo, serenity, snorkel blue, buttercup, limpet shell, lilac gray, fiesta, iced coffee and green flash. (See the website for the PANTONE numbers.)

Highlights of the Spring/Summer Fashion Trends

Flirty Slip Dresses

Slinky slip dresses are the ticket this spring, according to Marie Claire magazine. This sexy look incorporates underwear/lingerie as outerwear. Gotta love the comfort of silk and satin!

Large Plaids

Elle magazine points to “blown-out plaid” as a hot look this season. So, look for the checked prints, ladies!

Off the Shoulder

Another trendy fashion involves showing a little skin, reports Vogue magazine. Baring your shoulders, that is. Off-the-shoulder styles and cool cut outs rule this season.

Ruffles

Ruffles are a key detail trend this spring and summer. Glamour magazine shares that “This season’s ruffles are subtle, romantic and feminine.”

High Shine Fabrics

Think shiny, shimmery metallic, ladies. This goes for accessories, too. Sequins and any shiny material makes a high-impact piece out of a simple garment, according to Vogue magazine.

Suede

A flashback to the ’70s, suede is a hot look this season. The soft, delicate fabric is now season-less, much like leather the last few years, according to InStyle magazine.

Super Stripes

“The stripe is oh so right” this season, says Marie Claire magazine. And, we’re not talking thin, subtle stripes. It’s all about broad bands of color in bright tones.

Denim

The big trends in denim, says Vogue magazine, are printed denim, the long skirt, patchwork denim, feminine looks and the ’90s skater jean. Cropped flare jeans are also hot.

Big Sleeves

Puffy sleeves are back. Or, Old English sleeves as Harper’s Bazaar refers to them. The popular styles include bubble sleeves, bell sleeves and balloon sleeves. Quite a way to make a statement!

Other women’s fashion trends for this season include:

  • Spanish Influence
  • Victorian/Romantic
  • White Blouses
  • Pleats
  • Oversize Floral Prints
  • Fringe
  • Complicated Patterns/Mixed Prints
  • Maxiskirts and Dresses
  • Boldly Colored Actif-Sportif Outfits

Don’t Forget Your Man!

Johnny Mannah points to these men’s spring/summer fashion trends in his article on The Trend Spotter website.

  • Overalls
  • White Chinos/Trousers
  • Bomber Jackets
  • Fifties Shirts
  • Shorter Shorts

Utilitarian and monochromatic looks are also hot for men this season.

Knitting Yarns Are All The Rage!

0403-knitting-yarns-blog-v2

You’d better stock up on your favorite knitting yarns, granny! Creative folks of all ages — particularly those in their 20s and 30s — are cutting in on your yarn supply!

Even Hollywood celebrities like Uma Thurman, Katherine Heigl, Sarah Jessica Parker, Dakota Fanning, Julia Roberts, Amanda Seyfried and David Arquette are in on the knitting craze.

We’re not talking a small fad here, folks. The Craft Yarn Council of America estimates that over 50 million people know how to knit, crochet and craft with yarn. Now that’s a lot of love.

I mean, close to 30,000 people follow I Love Yarn Day on Facebook. Need I say more? (BTW, it’s October 15th this year.)

So, what’s behind the madness?

Barcelona

So You Want to be a Globetrotter? Barcelona Edition

Between beautiful scenery and getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a European vacation is like lemonade on a hot day. Whether you are in the midst of planning a trip or are simply exploring your future options, pick a destination that will leave you smiling, relaxed, and with plenty of fodder for Instagram pictures. Although there is no shortage of lovely vacation spots in Europe, some are simply a cut above the rest. This week, we are exploring the beautiful Barcelona!

Coming as no surprise to anyone, Barcelona makes the list for one of the best travel spots of the year. Combining historical authenticity and urban appeal, this Spanish city offers everything from Gothic architecture to street performers. A tourist will have no shortage of sights, smells, and sounds to absorb and enjoy! US News and Trip Advisor have a few “musts” for your Barcelona vacation.

Casa Batllo1. Take throwback Thursday to the next level with the historical buildings

Instagram’s first #TBT has nothing on Barcelona’s rich historical background. The city’s architecture is incredible, and a little touristy sightseeing action is a necessity for any traveler’s to-do list. Antoni Gaudi’s Church of the Sacred Family and Casa Milà are popular picks, as is his Casa Batlló. Leave room in your schedule for a trip to the Montjuïc Castle, and make sure that your camera battery is fully charged!

2. Try out the city’s sunny backyard – the beach

While Barcelona’s beaches might not have the most pristine sand and clearest water, they are nevertheless a perfect way to spend one of your vacation days and take in some vitamin D. After immersing yourself in the beautiful city La Ribera, change up the scenery with a relaxing beachy afternoon.

3. Shopping is a must

Wait no longer for the perfect excuse to be a shopaholic for a day (or three). Not only does Barcelona offer shopportunities that give most large European cities a run for their money, this Spanish metropolis also takes a more artistic twist that will make your Barcelona shopping experience as unique as the must-have jacket that you find on the street market.

4. Explore Las Ramblas

This street is one of Barcelona’s most famous and offers a wealth of unique experiences. From the aforementioned abundance of shopping experiences to tapas bars to human statue art, the pedestrian-friendly Las Ramblas will draw you into a cultural experience that you will never forget.

Don’t just take our word for it, though – some things you have to see to believe! Research your future vacation with magazines like Travel + Leisure and National Geographic Traveler that will help you plan the dream getaway.

We didn’t touch on all of Barcelona’s wonders! Comment below if you think that another must-see deserves to be on our Globetrotter: Barcelona list.
