Healthy Living Magazines for Body Positivity

body positivity

Studies reveal that happiness is a choice. These healthy living magazines will help you harmonize your mind, body and spirit.

Your happiness is at stake. With many Americans working longer and harder, chronic stress can lead to hypertension, back pain or worse. To maintain optimal health and body positivity, it’s crucial to find a balance between the mind, body and spirit. Here are three tips you can use right now and the healthy living magazines that will guide your way to a more balanced, positive life.

Stress in America

According to a study by the American Institute of Stress (AIS), stress in the workplace has escalated among American adults over the past few decades, suggesting that 80% of workers feel stress on the job. The study reports: “U.S. workers put in more hours on the job than the labor force of any other industrial nation, where the trend has been just the opposite.”

Job stress levels are specifically affected by workload, interpersonal relationships in the office, a work/life imbalance, or lack of job security. According to the study, “The severity of job stress depends on the magnitude of the demands that are being made and the individual’s sense of control or decision-making latitude he or she has in dealing with them.”

Job stress is more strongly associated with health problems than financial or family problems. More commonly, it can lead to back pain, fatigue, headaches, hypertension and even heart attacks.

Choosing Happiness

A Harvard study 80 years in the making reveals that happiness may be a choice. Happiness is determined by the ability to take care of yourself physically, financially and emotionally. The study revealed that money and fame don’t typically make people happy, but body positivity and healthy close relationships may help.

Robert Waldinger, a psychiatrist who recorded his TED Talk, “What Makes a Good Life? Lessons from the Longest Study on Happiness,” in 2015, concurs. “Good relationships don’t just protect our bodies; they protect our brains,” he says. “Loneliness kills. It’s as powerful as smoking or alcoholism.”

By nurturing self-care and your relationships with others, the study suggests you’ll have a better chance at achieving happiness. According to Harvard, your mantra should be:

1. Do good for others,
2. Do more of the things you enjoy (and are good at doing), and
3. Do good for yourself.

The Mind – Body – Spirit Connection

To help maintain optimal health and body positivity, there are a few simple things you can do to help balance your mind, body, and spirit. We’ve outlined a few of our favorites below.

Mind – Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a psychological state of paying attention to living in the present moment, without any judgment. A self-help guide published by Harvard Medical School suggests mindfulness may promote feelings of satisfaction in life by making it easier for you to savor the simple pleasures in life as you experience them. As you focus on the present and become fully engaged in activities, you may feel less preoccupied worrying about the past or the future. This may support self-esteem, body positivity, and foster deeper connections with other people. It may also support mental and physical well being.

The main technique to achieve this mental and emotional satisfaction is mindfulness meditation, a method of focusing your attention on your current senses by noticing the sights, smells, tastes and touches around you, without judgment, and then letting those thoughts and feelings go. UCLA Health offers free mindfulness meditations through guided audio recordings you can practice, or you can learn to meditate on your own through other self-help recordings, books, or instructional guides.

Body – Practice Yoga

The ancient practice of yoga, developed in India more than 5,000 years ago, helps cultivate a feeling of well being, peace, enlightenment and relaxation. Yoga stems from the Sanskrit word “Yuj,” mean “to yoke” or “to join” together. Through a combination of physical poses, breathing techniques and meditation, yoga aims to balance and harmonize the mind, body, and spirit.

Spirit – Practice Gratefulness

Researchers who studied spirituality over the course of several women’s lives found that the essence of their spirituality lies in being profoundly grateful, engaging in complete self-acceptance, and having a strong sense of assuredness. “Each person has the capacity for spirituality,” the study reported, especially later in life when aging adults contemplate the core meaning of life and are more akin to developing a relationship with a higher power.
