Bette Midler Cries Foul at Lady Gaga’s Mermaid Act

billboard_magazine_subscription_lady_gaga_20110226.jpgChalk this one up to truth being stranger than fiction. It’s not exactly news that Lady Gaga has been more than inspired by the musical stylings of, say, Madonna. Many have criticized Gaga’s single “Born This Way,” and how that melody seems strangely reminiscent of her predecessor’s song “Express Yourself.” Still, no one can claim Gaga’s crazy stage antics (let alone her outlandish costume choices) are anything but completely original. Well, until now.

It seems the highly successful pop star is further proving her love for all things ’80s-era by swiping another artist’s work. To be fair, she did cross over to comedy to do so.

People reports that during a recent show in Australia, Gaga appeared as a mermaid while singing and rolling about in a wheelchair. Sound strange? Kind of wacky? Or maybe eerily familiar, as the getup clearly is to Bette Midler fans. The comedy legend has been performing the wheelchair-bound mermaid shtick for decades. Uh-oh.

As stars are prone to do these days, Midler turned to Twitter to take on her copycat, saying, “I’m not sure @ladygaga knows that I’ve performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people–and many of them are still alive.” And the comic queen isn’t the only one upset about Gaga’s newest stage persona. Sydney pranksters even attempted to egg the star outside of a nightclub, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Gaga recently defended her onstage antics on “The Billy Bush Show” where she said, “I had no idea that she did that, and I’m a huge Bette Midler fan.”

Hmm… Something smells fishy, no?
