Feast for Your Thanksgiving Table

Photography credit: A.K. Vogel Photography

When people think of Thanksgiving, they usually think about their menu, but I believe a beautiful tablescape is equally as important. Let the harvest of fall inspire you; warm, pumpkin orange is a gorgeous color and perfect starting off point for your table. Get in touch with your glamorous side and let the glitter take over.

To achieve these glamorous pumpkins you’ll need orange puff glue, sponge brush, and orange glitter. When choosing your pumpkins, keep your table size and the food that will sit on your table in mind. You don’t want a table full of pumpkins with no room to set the turkey or ham!

To create the completely glittered pumpkins pictured here, bathe the pumpkin with the puff glue using a sponge brush and pour with glitter. If you want to incorporate a design onto them, try something simple and curvy. Shower the glitter over the wet glue and wait to dry before you shake off the excess. If an entire centerpiece of sparkling pumpkins isn’t your style, narrow down to using just one or two with a couple of standard pumpkins.

Place cards personalize your table settings. With a big group it is a must, but I love to use them even in the most intimate tablescapes. These cards were crafted with the same orange glitter, glue, and cardstock. Apply a thin layer of glue to each orange cardstock and then sprinkle on the glitter, let dry. Each guest’s name was handwritten in calligraphy on white cardstock in brown ink, finished with a dusting of brown glitter. Once the names are written, glue the white cardstock onto the dried orange glitter paper. The holders are most simple of all! Purchase chestnuts from your local grocery store and with the flat side down on the table, cut a slit across the top. This slit will serve as your holder; voila, you’ve got a creative place card holder!
No table is complete without flowers. An arrangement with a mix of orange roses, orchids and coffee berries are beautifully accented with the glittery pumpkins.

Holiday Hostess Gifts that Inspire Romance

I love this festive time of year, from the decorations to the celebrations; the holidays are a magical time to bring family and friends together. Holiday parties abound and there is no more perfect time to give the gift of romance. In place of a traditional hostess gift, I like to share the love and give my friends something that encourages their romance with their partner.

Holiday Spirits: Instead of just a bottle of wine, or liquor, add a pair of matching wine glasses.

Candles: EVERY room should smell good during the holidays, so give a set of votive candles that match their bedroom instead of a set of traditional holiday-scented candles.

Breakfast in bed basket: Include various jams, baguettes, croissants, scones or bagels, fresh fruit, coffee beans/grinds, and tea bags so that after an evening of entertaining, there are no worries the morning after.

Fireside: Gift some gourmet hot cocoa, two matching mugs, and a plush, warm blanket so they can snuggle together by the fire.

Seductive Sounds of the Season: Give the gift of music with a romantic and relaxing seasonal compilation that they can enjoy together while winding down.

Meal for Two: Give your hostess a night off from cooking with everything needed for a meal for two— gourmet pasta, sauces, infused olive oils, balsamic vinegar- wrapped in a beautiful bowl or serving dish.

What is your favorite holiday hostess gift? Share your ideas for giving the gift of romance.

Tune into The Moll Anderson Show this Saturday on XM 168, (2 pm PST, 5pm EST) as I get the nitty gritty from plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Rey (also known as Dr. 90210). Also Dr. Judy Rosenberg joins the hotline to discuss how to quit the smoking habit this holiday season.

Spice Up Your Holidays with Moll Anderson’s Essential Spices

Holiday dinners shared with family and friends are the most memorable. For me, the holiday season is when I prepare the timeless family recipes that my husband and family enjoy. The combination of flavor from sweet and savory to hot and spicy are pleasing to the palate. The spices for fall and winter add heat to your menu–from the warmth of cinnamon to the kick of cumin.

Coriander—works with both sweet and savory foods. Grind and add to cookies, or coat chicken before grilling.

Cinnamon—Used since ancient times, cinnamon makes a home smell homey, so use it with abandon in baked goods. Plenty of long-simmered meats benefit from a cinnamon stick in the pot. It’s said to treat colds, ease nausea and improve energy levels.

Cumin—From the Southwest to the Middle East, cumin arouses appetites with its tantalizing fragrance.

Paprika—Deep red paprika promises–and delivers–a rich pepper flavor. It’s common in Spanish and Hungarian foods.

Fennel—Small, striped seed with a big licorice flavor that’s at home in Italian and Scandinavian food and is wonderful with fish.

Chili powder—Heats up any dish with a little ground fire. The mixture typically includes cumin, oregano and sometimes garlic.

Nutmeg—Warm and sweet flavor goes naturally with autumn foods like winter squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, custard, raisins and other fruit.

Kosher Salt—Coarse flat grains add crunch as well as seasoning. Kosher salt makes the best rub for grilled meat

Black Pepper—Good quality peppercorns have just enough bite to get your attention, and more fragrance than heat.

How to Make Moll Anderson’s Salad to Go

Layers of Love - Asian Salad. Photo credit: beall + thomas photography

When making a salad to pack on a picnic, work backwards. Add your dressing to the container first and then add in your fruits and veggies, cheese, nuts and toppings of your choice next. The lettuce will be your final layer so that it will not be weighed down by your toppings in transit. Think of it like building your salad upside down. All you need to do is dump it out onto your plate when you get there and it will be ready to eat.

Layers Of Love Asian Salad Recipe

Ginger Dressing:
3 tablespoons grated fresh ginger
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 to 3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon lime or orange juice
1/2 teaspoon minced serrano chile

Salad
1/2 cup sugar snap peas or snow peas, sliced
1/2 cup shredded purple cabbage
2 green onions, sliced
1/2 cup cucumber slices
Alfalfa sprouts, spicy sprouts or bean sprouts
2 tablespoons chopped toasted almonds
1/2 cup torn romaine lettuce
For the dressing, combine the dressing ingredients in a bowl with a whisk, or shake in a jar with a tight-fitting lid.

For the salads, pour about 2 tablespoons of the dressing into each of two 1-quart- size wide-mouth canning jars. Add a layer of sugar snaps, dividing them evenly between the jars. Repeat with the cabbage, green onions, cucumber and sprouts. Top with a layer of lettuce. Fit the lids on the jars and tighten the rings.

When ready to serve, turn the jars over to coat the vegetables with dressing. Serves 2.

Moll Anderson’s Tips on Planning a Seductive Picnic for Two

Fall is the perfect time for enjoying a picnic for two. The warm colors of the changing leaves provide a beautiful backdrop to a romantic picnic. Plan on a scenic drive through the country to find your location, or check out nature centers or your local park for a nature filled retreat. Planning a picnic does not need to be time consuming or expensive.

There are numerous options for packing your picnic essentials, from the traditional picnic baskets, to canvas totes with handles, to wire baskets. Choose one that is strong enough to hold your plates and heavier essentials. Layer your heavier items first and use your linens to protect your breakables.

What to pack?

Soft goods: Tablecloth and napkins; large blanket, quilt, or mat; pillows

Hard goods: Dinnerware; glassware; silverware; cooler; vase or basket for flowers; seductive spices (Tabasco, ketchup, mustard, salt & pepper— whatever your heart desires)

Ambiance: Candles; flowers; music: iPod, portable speakers, or radio (check batteries beforehand); lanterns

Other picnic essentials: Corkscrew or bottle opener; lighter for the candles; hand cleaner or wipes; trash bags for clean-up afterward

Food and drink: This can be as simple or as complicated as you have time for. You can cook, order to-go, or just use items on hand in your pantry and fridge.
