The Best Magazine Covers of 2013

Best Magazine Covers 2013What were the best magazine covers of the past year? We scoured hundreds of covers from 2013 and came up with these ten. Which one is your favorite?

Before 2013 slips away, we think it’s only appropriate to look back at some of the best, most memorable magazine covers of the past year.

Narrowing down the hundreds of magazine covers that are published during any given year to a short list of the best is a daunting task to be sure, especially since they can play numerous roles. Generally, magazine covers are a reflection of society—the best, the worst, the artistic, the everyday, the inspirational, the beautiful, and so on.

With these many roles in mind, we’ve deemed these ten magazine covers, in no particular order, as the best of 2013:

Boston Magazine, “We Will Finish the Race,” May 2013: On the frontlines of the Boston Marathon bombings in April, Boston Magazine turned the tragedy into this touching moment featuring shoes of runners that also celebrates the best of the human spirit and its resiliency.

O, The Oprah Magazine, “Let’s Talk About Hair,” September 2013: Typically Oprah’s featured on her namesake magazine with nary a hair out of place. But thanks to a new editor and a new outlook on the magazine’s covers, Oprah’s taking an inspirational walk on the wilder side.

People, “The Royals’ Big Day,” November 11, 2013: Whether you love or hate all the royal attention these two—now three—have been given, you have to love this People magazine cover that features Prince William in the role of involved father.

Bloomberg Businessweek, “The Surprising Sophistication of Twitter,” November 7, 2013: The winner of FishBowlNY’s Cover of the Year poll gets high marks from us, too. The business magazine gave the social bird a sophisticated new look ahead of its initial public offering on the stock market.

Garden & Gun, “Southern Secrets,” February/March 2013: This Southern lifestyle magazine is one of our favorites, but we really love this simple cover and the must-know secrets of the region—everything from the perfect deviled eggs to the perfect Bloody Mary—that it promises to serve up.

Coastal Living, “The Joys of Summer,” July/August 2013: Ahh, the joys of being a kid during those carefree summer days. Not only does this cover capture a perfect day at the beach, but it also celebrates the beautiful symbol of our independence.

Elle, “Women In Music! Rita Ora,” May 2013: There were lots of eye-catching looks on fashion magazine covers this year, but Rita Ora’s sexy vintage-inspired style stood out among the trendy crowd.

Harper’s BAZAAR, “All You Need for Fall,” September 2013: We know Sarah Jessica Parker for her over-the-top shoes, so now add hats to that list with this fashion magazine’s subscription cover from its blockbuster September issue.

ESPN The Magazine, “The Body Issue: Gary Player,” July 2013: The 77-year-old golfer made history this year as the oldest athlete to be featured in the magazine’s annual celebration of the human form. It’s also a good reminder that age is just a number.

Interview Magazine, “The Model Issue,” September 2013: For more proof that people get better with age, Interview Magazine featured seven industry veterans—including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington—on seven different covers of its “Model Issue.”
